- The president's three main jobs as chief diplomat are 1) Initiation of foreign policy 2) The recognition of new foreign governments 3) The making of treaties
- To initiate foreign policy the president will meet with leaders of different countries to work out agreements regarding defense, trade, etc.
- The president, on behalf of the United States, decides whether or not to accept the legal existence of another government, this is called diplomatic recognition
- The president also makes treaties with other countries; some are military treaties, but most are about water rights, fishing laws, etc.
